The second skin of the earth, the city, provides shelter, space and opportunities for human life. Its structures, materiality and forms are constantly changing, adapting and evolving in response to new challenges. The second skin of human beings, the fabric, provides protection, space and opportunities for movement. Its structures, materiality and forms are constantly changing, adapting and evolving in response to new lifestyles and user requirements. What do the city and the fabric have in common in their role as second skins? Which traits and functionalities are specific? Which demands will both “skins” need to respond to in the future? What can be learned from drawing analogies and from transferring design methodologies and prototypical thinking from one scale to the other?
In the design studio, the human scale will be the mediator between the urban and the micro fabric scales. The “second skin of earth” will be explored through the eyes of a fabric or textiles designer and the architects will learn from clothing, surfaces, facades and interface elements to interpret and rethink urban fabric. A trans-disziplinary team of architects and textile and product designers jointly examine the characteristics of both “skins” and create solutions at different scales. Alexanderplatz serves as study field and the outcome – an Adaptive Skin of the Future – will by expressed in form of a dynamic masterplan.
The project is designed as a teaching cooperation between Nadine Kuhla von Bergmann (former researcher of the department at CHORA Conscious City) and the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee (Prof. Antonella Giannone, Prof. Christiane Sauer) and is attended by students of both universities.The architectural detail design process is supported by the Department of Building Technology & Design, TU Berlin (Marta Carrero Casas). Gian Marco Morigi and Sophia Albrecht supported in research around urban plans for Alexanderplatz and in future urban trends.
