The national funding program “Smart Cities”, initiated by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI) and the KfW bank, supports smart city strategies based on integrated urban development concepts, open-source technologies and with added value for the majority of the society - so all criteria in line with the German “Smart City Charta”.
Creative Climate Cities supports the German ministry as part of an expert team which evaluates the funding applications referring to the National Smart City Charta and annual focus theme. In 2020, the call for projects focussed on "public welfare and city networks".

Successful municipalities of the first two calls use digital tools, applications and data strategies as drivers for resilient urban developments. The majority of digital urban transformation projects are in the fields of e-government, participation of citizens, infrastructure services and data-based scenario planning tools. The national funding programme is an important driver towards resilient city developments rooted in local economies, data competencies of decision makers and participation of citizens with positive impact on districts and neighborhoods.
