The funding program “Smart Cities Made in Germany”, initiated by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI) and the KFW bank, supports smart city projects aimed at implementing digital strategies and tools to generate integrated urban development concepts, digital sovereignty and open-source technologies in line with the German “Smart City Charta”.
Creative Climate Cities analysed the BMI-funded model projects of the first season and found a high diversity in the range of topics for a sustainable digital transformation. The successful municipalities use the digitalization of urban development primarily to increase their competence in administration, as a tool for ensuring the participation of citizens and as a driver of the local economy.
